Low-lying northern province of the
Netherlands area 2,660 sq km/1,027 sq mi
population (1988) 437,000 towns capital
Assen; Emmen, Hoogeveen physical fenland and
moors; well-drained clay and peat soils
products livestock, arable crops,
horticulture, petroleum history governed in
the Middle Ages by provincial nobles and by
bishops of Utrecht, Drenthe was eventually
acquired by Charles V of Spain in 1536. It
developed following land drainage initiated
in the mid-18th century and was established
as a separate province of the Netherlands in
1796.
